INBetween 2013 - 2017 there was a huge adoption of Digital Intra Oral Scanning using an Intra Oral Sensor in the Indian Dental healthcare ecosystem. This paved way for new technology and acceptance from Dentists for the same. OPG was relatively available and accepted however CBCT was not easily available commercially in the market.
Itwas early 2017 and CBCT was a technology that was just only emerging in the Indian market, not every Dentist knew or understood the concept of CBCT, however A 2D Image can never give the complete picture of a 3D object : but adoption of CBCT was slow at the time, primarily due to lack of affordability and awareness amongst Dentists, and that is where our story began! The problem starts with lack of affordability and availability of the right technology and the end result is substandard treatment for the patient, hampering the complete Dental healthcare ecosystem. The idea was to be able to solve a glaring problem, the lack of awareness and availability of advanced diagnostic modalities and reporting support. To give Dental Diagnostics the due respect and chance it deserves to be able to positively impact the Dental healthcare ecosystem.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a radiographic imaging method that allows accurate imaging of hard tissue structures, it provides a three-dimensional image viewing, enabling exact location and extent of lesions or any anatomical region.
With CBCT's introduction in dentistry, dental clinicians can not only have profound knowledge of oral pathology but also enhance the access to a detailed view of the underlying structures and their relations. This 3D image is groundbreaking since the process of decision-making becomes simpler and the recognition of the bony defects from different angles becomes easier.
CBCT has a rapid scan time, the single rotation, which is used in CBCT technology to acquire basis images for 3D imaging usually requires scan time ranging from 5 to 40 seconds comparable to OPG/panoramic radiography. This short scanning time is advantageous in plummeting the artifacts owing to patient movement.
CT vs CBCT - The Difference
If both jaws are scanned, the exposure doubles! A CBCT scans both the maxilla and mandible at the same time hence reducing exposure.
CT has not been widely utilized due to the high radiation dosage, the cost of the machine and a dentist’s unfamiliarity with interpreting CT results.
In comparison with CT, CBCT has high accuracy and sensitivity and can capture the maxilla and mandible in a single rotation of the X-ray source. With CBCT we can experience more accurate diagnosis of skeletal asymmetry, easier location of impacted teeth, improved surgical planning, and increased detection of pathologies.
The Result
Dr. Shilika Lilaramani, under the guidance of seniors in the industry led the project from a single CBCT centre to a brand,
With large FOV machines, a well trained team, low radiation as a thumb rule, standard processes and a great panel of radiologists working with us, Vi-Scan has been able to establish credibility in the market. Our online presence and customer satisfaction speaks for the effort we are putting to create a sustainable solution for the Dentists and the public.
Imagine travelling long distances to get a scan, in pain, just waiting to get treated and praying that it's all over soon!.
For a Dentist it's always a dilemma, should they take a risk and treat the patient, ease them of their pain quickly or should they ask the patient to get a CBCT or OPG scan so that they can diagnose accurately and carry out the treatment in a predictable manner!.
Our goal and primary reason behind growing and expanding to so many centres is to eliminate this dilemma, one locality at a time. The availability of CBCT technology in the country is low in comparison to CT and MRI, though over 85% of the Indian population suffers from Dental disease and may need a CBCT scan through the course of their life, the lack of availability of this technology forces Dentists to perform basic procedures such as Root Canal and even complex procedures such as Dental Implants without the required visibility before starting the treatment.
We believe one day, NO Dentist, regardless of location, will have to think twice before asking his patient to get an extra oral scan Vi-Scan aims to make that thought a reality!.
